Baby Boomers' After-Retirement Work Plans and Policy Implications

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to examine baby boomers’ plans for and willingness to workafter retirement and to analyze the factors influencing them. For this purpose, 660 baby boomers inGyeonggi province were surveyed and the data was analyzed by dichotomous logistic regressionand multiple regression. The results of the study were as follows: First, more than half ofrespondents(50.6%) said that they wanted to keep working after retirement. Their expected monthly-income was 1,410,000 won. Second, female gender, a lower level of education, and the experienceof damage due to IMF policies were variables that significantly affected the work plans of babyboomers who were currently at work. Gender, occupation, household income, and career movementhad significant effect on willingness to work after retirement. Based on these findings, the studymade several suggestions, including creating programs to support career development, making jobsspecifically for the elderly, and expanding job opportunity for female baby boomers.
