Factors Affecting Successful Aging and Subjective Well-being for Elderly Korean-Americans in Honolulu, HI

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate successful aging and subjective well-being of elderlyKorean-Americans and to analyze the factors influencing these concepts. Data were collected from117 participants aged 60 and older in Honolulu, HI, USA. SPSS 19.0 software was used for adescriptive analysis of the data pertaining to successful aging and subjective well-being and ahierarchical regression analysis was used to examine the factors influencing reports of successfulaging and subjective well-being. The findings indicate that (1) the mean score of successful agingas measured by a five-point Likert scale was 3.53 and that the mean score of subjective well-beingusing Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale was 10.21, indicating fairly good successful agingand subjective well-being; (2) instrumental and emotional support from family and relatives and thenumber of social activities were statistically significant factors predicting higher degrees ofsuccessful aging in the elderly Korean-Americans; (3) the high number for income sources,emotional support from family and relatives, and the low number for chronic diseases weresignificant factors predicting subjective well-being in the Korean-Americans in this study. Based onthe findings, implications for social welfare intervention strategies to improve successful aging andsubjective well-being in Korean-Americans are discussed.
