Abstract

The purpose of this study is to understand the life experiences of male spouses in internationalmarriages. Data were collected from 8 Korean men who were husbands in international marriagesvia in-depth interviews, and issues were categorized according to Mandelbaum's (1973) analyticframework. For international marriage, the concepts studied here were < the 'exhausted saltmaker'>, dimensions of life consisting of 'in the blazing sun and, early life', 'exhausted saltmaker, and themarket of marriage', 'draw water, and from a distance'. The experience of married life, consisted of 'windy, not easy to adapt', 'sunlight, a position of hot and warm-hearted head ofhousehold', 'one's sea, family of each other', and 'master the seawater'. The adaptation of marriedlife, consisted of 'more sweet more sour, flexible eyes of life', 'detailedcrystal, relation network', 'my salt-pond, open and close', 'sweat, couple's affection', and'cultivating, active position'. Based on the survey findings, we make suggestions for social workpractices and policies.
