A Study on the Intergenerational Cycle of Domestic Violence: Based on the Effects of the Revictimization of Women throughout Their Lives
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the pattern of domestic violence victimizationthroughout the victimized women’s lives, and to propose that depression mediates the relationshipbetween revictimization over the life course and perpetration of child abuse by drawing onAgnew(1992)’s general strain theory. Using a representative sample of 1,184 married women withchildren aged under 19, we found that approximately 1 out of 10 women had experienced bothchildhood physical abuse by caregivers and physical violence by male partners. Second, therevictimization of domestic violence throughout the life course of women was a significant predictorof child abuse. Lastly, depression partly mediated the relationship between revictimization over thelife course and child abuse. Based on these results, we provide theoretical and practical suggestions.
