The Effect of Family Support and Self-differentiation on the College Life Adjustment of Midlife Married Women Students
Abstract
This study focuses on investigating the effect of family support and self-differentiation on thecollege life adjustment of middle-aged married women college students. The participants were 194married women who had more than one child. The family support measure consisted of the threefactors of emotional, evaluative, and instrumental support. Self-differentiation was measured in thefive subscales of emotional reactivity, I-position, fusion with others, emotional cutoff, and emotionalfusion. Multiple regression results indicated that evaluative family support was a significantpredictor of the environmental, academic, and physical adjustment to college life. The emotionalcutoff of self-differentiation had significant effects on all dimensions of college life, while I-positioninfluenced emotional, environmental, and physical adjustment. The results were discussed in termsof the implications for practical support and future research.
