The purpose of this study is to examine the role of social network intimacy and social functionsin enhancing empowerment among married immigrant women. One hundred fifty married immigrantwomen residing in Gyeonggi province and Seoul were surveyed. There are three research questions.The first question is to find out whether social network intimacy influences the empowerment ofmarried immigrant women. The second question analyzes whether social support functions have aneffect on the empowerment of married immigrant women. The third question is to find out whethersocial support mediates the relationship between social network intimacy and the empowerment ofmarried immigrant women. Multiple regression analysis and Sobel test are used to analyze thestudy questions. The findings reveal that social network intimacy influences the empowerment ofmarried immigrant women. Social support functions also have a positive association withempowerment, and social support functions have a mediating effect on the relationship betweensocial network intimacy and empowerment. Based on the findings, the contribution of this study andimplications for policy and practice for married women’s empowerment are discussed.
