The Effects of the Perception of Parental Role Responsibilities on Parenting Style : A Comparative Study of International Parents, Korean-American Parents Living in the United States and Korean Parents Living in Korea

Abstract

The purpose of this cross-cultural study is to investigate the effects of the perception of parentalrole responsibilities on parenting style. The subjects of this study are 79 international parents, 40Korean-American parents living in the United States, and 36 Korean parents living in Korea whohave children under 18 years of age(a total of 155 subjects). The results are as follows. First, allthree parent groups have a significant correlation with the perception of parental role responsibilitiesto the authoritative parenting style and the authoritarian parenting style. Second, in the case ofinternational parents, the sub-factors of the relationship between the child and the social institutionand that between the child and the family explain the authoritarian parenting style. A sub-factor ofphysical health explains the authoritative parenting style. In the case of Korean-American parents,the sub-factor of material(food/clothing/shelter) explains the authoritarian parenting style. Thesub-factors of material and child care explain the permissive parenting style. A sub-factor ofcognitive development explains the authoritative parenting style. In the case of Korean parents, thesub-factors of child care and survival skills explain the authoritarian parenting style. A sub-factorof survival skills explains the permissive parenting style. Finally, the sub-factors of norms andsocial values explain the authoritative parenting style.
